COLLEGE ESSAY SUMMER WRITING WORKSHOP

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Essay Workshop guide students through the entire college essay process in a dynamic, small group setting by current English teachers. From the development of an original and compelling idea, to the drafting and revision process, every student will benefit from a professional review, and will leave the workshop with a vivid and meaningful College Application Essay. Each class will have a maximum of 25 students. Here is how a typical class would work:

Two days of actual class time on a Mon/Wed (as listed in all sessions). The first class topics will be:

  • Importance of the essay and what admissions counselors are looking for in it
  • Common Application Essay Topics and Supplemental Essays: Including often written topics and recent topics
  • General Rules for Writing and Grammar

The second class will include:

  • Sample College Essays will be read and analyzed.
  • Writing technique revisions
  • Personal Writing Style and Voice
  • Personal Assessment Prompts to help with ideas for topics

That friday students will schedule time to meet with the instructor in person or via Google Hangout to go over topic ideas. The following Monday by 5pm the rough draft is due. That Tuesday or Wednesday students will communicate with the instructor via Google Hangout (in person if requested). Thursday the final draft is due. Instructors can be flexible with meeting times and deadlines if communicated up front. The instructor will provide advice and support in the choice of topics and the entire process of writing, but students are responsible for drafting on their own and completing the final essay.
